Cloud Platform UX
Imagine computing environment, where you do not have to worry about what application you use, where the data is, and which computer you are using. You can participate in product design from any where, from any device, whether it be windows PC, mac, or smart phone.
The cloud platform, in which Fusion 360 is built on, aims for a single platform that offers consistent UI and data framework across Autodesk’s applications that covers the lifecycle of product design.
Marking menu is an Autodesk's signature user interface that allows selection of a command from radial menu layout. The goal of the project is for the Autodesk Inventor to adopt the new UI as a form of context menu.
This project demonstrates how large scale usage data can help optimizing user interface. The data-driven design process resulted in 98% of user adoption of the new interface from the very first release of marking menu.
Its best practice process and results are being presented as a case study at CHI 2013 at Paris, France.
3D Object Manipulation
While it seems to be obvious where you want to put a 3D object in a virtual world, you may end up taking many (frustrating) steps to actually place it exactly where it should be.
The challenge is that the mouse you use provides only x-y coordinate on screen and where you want the object to be is in x-y-z space. During my Ph.D. thesis, I invented an algorithm based on observation about how users recognize the spatial relationship between objects. The result showed that the new algorithm allowed users put together an assembly three times faster than using traditional triads in the four-pane view.
This is a corporate initiative to align the user interface of the company's flagship software. The goal of the project was to redesign Autodesk Inventor's command access points to the ribbon UI.
Ease of Modeling
In this project, we aimed to change Inventor's model interaction paradigm so that the user attention is focused onto the graphics canvas rather than using the dialog box in the periphery of the window.
